As molecules change their position, the pressure difference is formed and it is transferred as a form of wave. The same thing occurs for the sound wave inside a tube. The air molecules inside the tube oscillate to make a sound wave. However, there exists a constraint of oscillation-the air molecules move freely at the open end and can barely move at the closed end. This constraint enables the analysis of standing wave formed inside the tube. The following experiments are about the resonance frequency of standing waves formed inside the open/closed tube. II. Theoretical Basis In our lives, sound that we hear is in fact a composition of waves with a lot of frequencies. These waves are called sound waves, and it is transmitted through gases and liquids as longitudinal waves, solids as both longitudinal and transverse waves. Because sound wave is wave of altering pressure deviations, some local regions are in compression and rarefaction. Especially, in tube, the resonance can be occurred, with the original wave being interfered by the reflected wave. In open tube, the theoretical values of resonant frequencies are following: The equation above is obtained from the following equation , and it is derived by considering reflection in the end of open tube, free edge. Since the reflection occurred in the free edge do not change the phase of wave, the double of length could be the multiple of wavelength. Also, in closed tube, the theoretical values of resonant frequencies are following: Also, the equation above is obtained from the following equation , and it is derived by considering reflection in the end of closed tube, dead end. Since the reflection occurred in the dead edge flips the phase of wave, the double of length could be the multiple and half of wavelength. The following pictures are the picture of displacement of air in specific position. However, the equations aforementioned are not exactly same to the real values, since the behavior of wave at the end of tube is dependent to the other factors such as diameter. So, the empirical formula obtained by some experiments is: for an open tube; for a closed tube;
