Purpose : To understand sludge colume index (SVI) used as a parameter for wastewater operation. SVI is obtained by measuring sludge volume after 30 minutes settling (SV30) then dividing it with MLSS. As a result, SVI (mL/g) designates sludge volume of 1g sludge settled for 30 minutes.
Sludge Volume Index (SVI) is a very important indicator that determines your control or rate of desludging on how much sludge is to be returned to the aeration basin and how much to take it out from the system. It actually serves as a very important empirical measurement that can be used as a guide to maintain sufficient concentration of activated sludge in the aeration basin whereby too much or too little can be considered detrimental to the system몶s overall health. To put it in a lay man몶s term, desludging or sometimes referred to as recycling sludge process, actually plays a very important role because the whole operation is needed to somehow strike a balance between removing dead or aged bacteria out of the systems or to determine how much goes back to the aeration pond.
