FreeMarkets Online, the innovator of internet auction.
FreeMarkets Online was founded in Pittsburgh in 1995. Pittsburgh had regional benefits; first, they had abundant technical personnel and the labor costs were relatively low. Second, Pittsburgh had prominent technique in manufacturing software. Last but not least, the area where Pittsburgh was located on Midwest of the U.S. was appropriate for large companies so that it was easy to link some other regions.
In the end of the 20th century, internet was invented and started to boom up in business. FreeMarkets Online adapted to new environment of the innovation of internet. Glen Meakem and Sam Kinney, the two co-founders of FreeMarkets Online, Inc, tried to execute Internet Bid events. Before the appearance of FreeMarkets Online, industries and individuals used the real time bid events. However, there were several problems in the real time bid system. Industrial buyers had a lot of trouble to buy products from various providers. When buyers made purchasing decision, they found that they had very limited information related to decision-making. Also, they recognized that the average level of the providers in their own area might be lower than those of other regions. People wanted more information and accurate estimation about what they bought. It means that the absence of information made people difficult to find proper providers. Finally, FreeMarkets Online developed the software using for internet auction; BidWare and BidServer software. They opened the era of Internet Bid event, and they were able to succeed in their business. FreeMarkets Online culminated real time competitive bidding events with their technologies and know-how. They offered a number of potential suppliers to a single industrial buyer. They also gave various and important information of products to industrial buyers to conduct their decision easily.
